Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s formal admission as the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC).
Reacting to the admission, President Tinubu described the development as a proud moment for the country and a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s energy reforms and leadership role in Africa.
The statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on Friday in Abuja, said that Nigeria’s admission into the century-old global network of more than 100 countries would enable Nigeria to play a greater role in shaping global energy discourse.
According to him, the development will strengthen Nigeria’s voice on issues of energy security, equity and sustainability.
Tinubu congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, led by Mr. Abdulrazaq Isa, as Chairman and Mr. Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer.
He also congratulated other distinguished Nigerians drawn from the energy industry, regulatory institutions, finance, academia and the Future Energy Leaders community who will serve on the inaugural board.
The Nigerian leader described Isa as a distinguished patriot and trailblazing industrialist whose investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy had expanded opportunities for Nigerian enterprise.
He also praised Wunti as one of Nigeria’s finest energy strategists and reform champions.
Tinubu said that Wunti’s more than three decades of service had been marked by landmark reforms that enhanced national revenues and restored investor confidence in the energy sector.
He noted that the composition of the board reflected a blend of experienced industry leaders, regulators, finance experts and youth representatives.
He said that the combination would provide the balance, neutrality and credibility needed for WEC Nigeria to succeed.
The president reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for WEC Nigeria as a neutral and technology-agnostic platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation and innovation.
He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working with the WEC in London and its global community to promote secure, affordable and sustainable energy and wished the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and members of the inaugural board success in their new responsibilities.
