The Chadian government and the World Food Programme (WFP) signed a $24.6 million financing agreement on Monday in Ndjamena to strengthen food security and resilience among vulnerable populations in five provinces across the country.
This financing, supported by the World Bank through the ProAgri project, will enable the rehabilitation of 5,300 hectares of degraded land and benefit nearly 197,000 people, including farmers, refugees, and internally displaced persons.
The provinces include Lac, Logone Oriental, Wadi Fira, Ouaddai and Sila. The project also targets priority agricultural value chains such as sesame, peanuts and corn and aims to reduce dependence on humanitarian aid in a context marked by the influx of Sudanese refugees and extreme weather events.
Between June and August, nearly 3.7 million people in Chad are at risk of experiencing severe food insecurity, according to the authorities.
The partnership is part of the “Haguina” vision, which aims to reach 500,000 people through agricultural and community resilience initiatives.
