Senegalese President and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Bassirou Diomaye Faye urged newly appointed judges of the Community Court of Justice to uphold strict impartiality and integrity to reinforce public confidence in regional institutions.
Speaking during the formal swearing-in ceremony of five new judges on Tuesday evening in Abuja, President Faye underscored the central role of the regional bench in safeguarding the rule of law, protecting fundamental human rights, and mediating interstate disputes. Calling on the jurists to execute their duties with rigorous independence and fairness, the ECOWAS Chair noted that equitable legal rulings serve as an essential cornerstone for consolidating peace, security, and regional stability.
The ceremony marked the official assumption of office for judges Désiré Henri Aihou of Benin, Awa Bah of The Gambia, Charlyne M. Brumskine of Liberia, Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu of Nigeria, and Yaouza Ouro-Sama of Togo. Appointed to non-renewable four-year terms during the 69th ECOWAS Summit in Lungi, Sierra Leone, the five judges enter office amid pressing governance, security, and integration challenges across West Africa. Their inauguration strengthens the Community’s judicial apparatus as regional authorities place increased emphasis on rule-governed integration and accessible legal protection for citizens across member states.
