In a landmark decision, UNESCO has officially designated Essaouira, Morocco, as the host city for the 18th annual session of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network Conference in 2026.
This marks the first time in history that this prestigious global gathering, dedicated to culture, innovation, and sustainable urban development, will be held on African soil and in an Arab city.
The selection process, conducted through a digital vote by the member cities of the Creative Cities Network, saw Essaouira emerge as the clear and resounding favorite.
Since its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music in 2019, Essaouira has consistently demonstrated that creativity is not a luxury, but a vital force. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the desert, the city pulsates with rhythm. From the hypnotic beats of Gnaoua to the improvised grace of jazz beneath the argan trees, music has become both Essaouira’s signature and its very soul. It is a place where traditions are not merely preserved, but actively evolve, blend, and come vibrantly to life.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Conference brings together over 350 cities worldwide, each representing a unique facet of culture and creativity—ranging from gastronomy and design to media arts and traditional crafts.
While the specific theme for the 2026 edition in Essaouira is yet to be announced, its core mission will remain consistent: to champion sustainable local cultural policies and foster global cooperation. Beyond the formal panels and political discussions, the conference promises to showcase the intrinsic spirit of Essaouira – a city where ancient medinas, historic Jewish quarters, and refreshing coastal breezes intertwine to tell stories of coexistence, cultural exchange, and boundless imagination.
UNESCO’s collaboration with Essaouira extends beyond mere symbolism. It aligns seamlessly with broader global initiatives such as MONDIACULT 2025 and actively supports the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11, which advocates for inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.
In 2026, the world will converge on Essaouira not just for a conference, but to discover a city of winds, words, and wonder, where creativity does not merely exist – it truly soars.
