A delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliamentary Oversight Committee completed a five-day field mission to The Gambia, focused on evaluating the operations of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) and preparing for the phased transfer of security responsibilities to national forces.
Led by Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. from October 27 to 31, 2026, the parliamentary team examined the regional force’s mandate, its operational achievements, its resource management, and logistical challenges.
The primary objective was to identify the conditions necessary to ensure a safe and sustainable security transition to the Gambian Defence and Security Forces (GDSF).
During its visit, the delegation travelled to ECOMIG headquarters, where it was received by the force commander, Colonel Aliou Tine.
The discussions focused on strategic coordination with Gambian security institutions and the mission’s contribution to the country’s stabilization.
The parliamentarians also conducted field visits, notably to the Nigerian contingent’s camp (NIGCOY), to observe the operational conditions of the deployed troops.
Deployed in 2017 following the post-election crisis, ECOMIG is thus taking a decisive step toward the full handover of security sovereignty to the authorities in Banjul.
