Senegal has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive political dialogue as the primary mechanism for resolving the ongoing governance crisis in Guinea-Bissau, seeking consensus among political and civil society leaders under the mediation mandate of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Senegalese Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad Cheikh Niang traveled to Bissau on Monday, October 26, 2026, to engage in high-level consultations aimed at establishing common ground regarding the timeline, modalities, and operational framework for restoring constitutional order.
According to an official statement released by Senegal’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, Minister Niang met with Guinea-Bissau’s transitional president, the prime minister, members of the National Transition Council, and accredited diplomatic representatives, alongside broad consultations with local political parties and civil society organizations. Rather than limiting discussions solely to executive transitional authorities, Dakar’s diplomatic mission prioritized gathering comprehensive stakeholder feedback on transitional benchmarks and institutional safeguards. The resulting proposals will be formally submitted to relevant ECOWAS bodies to guide upcoming regional decision-making, reinforce institutional stability, and support a peaceful, sovereign resolution to the political crisis.
