The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) claim to have regained the initiative after a wave of coordinated attacks struck several towns on July 4, though intense fighting resumed the following day in the strategic town of Anéfis.
According to an official military statement issued on July 6, 2026, a synchronized air and ground response initially allowed government forces to control the situation across the targeted areas. However, the general staff specified that combat flared up again on the morning of July 5 in Anéfis following the arrival of enemy reinforcements heavily equipped with fresh personnel and material.
The widespread Saturday assault simultaneously targeted Aguel-Hoc, Anéfis, Gao, Sevare, and Kenieroba, before spreading further to Konna and the Somadougou-Soufroulaye area. In their counter-offensive, the Malian Armed Forces acted with the support of their international partners, notably Africa Corps, which was explicitly mentioned in operations conducted to secure Konna and Somadougou. The official provisional toll released by the army reports that 20 assailants were neutralized in Sevare and six in Gao, while the military suffered one death and four wounded in Gao. For the actions in Konna and Somadougou, the general staff confirmed heavy human and material losses among the enemy without providing specific figures. Meanwhile, a death notice from the National Union of Malian Military Personnel (SYNEM Gao) highlighted the human toll on civilians, reporting that an elderly woman and a primary school girl died, and four others were rushed to the Gao Hospital emergency room after a shell landed inside a residential compound.
Responsibility for the complex offensive is split among different armed groups, with the Azawad Liberation Front (ALF) claiming the assault on Anéfis, and the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group JNIM claiming responsibility for the broader strikes against military and pro-government positions. Anéfis has emerged as one of the primary prizes in this new confrontation because it sits on the critical axis connecting Gao, Kidal, and Aguel-Hoc. Alongside Aguel-Hoc, Anéfis represents one of the final strongholds of Malian military and Russian partner presence in the volatile Kidal region following major setbacks earlier in the year. The other targeted locations carry distinct strategic weight; Gao remains the north’s major military and logistical hub, while Sevare and Konna anchor the strategic network in the central Mopti region. Further south, Kenieroba houses a sensitive prison known for holding high-value prisoners, including JNIM fighters and individuals detained after previous hostilities.
This latest surge in violence comes just over two months after the devastating coordinated attacks of April 25 and 26, 2026, which were claimed by JNIM and the FLN. Those prior strikes rattled Bamako, Kati, Gao, Sevare, Mopti, and Kidal, and were tragically marked by the death of Defence Minister Sadio Camara alongside the loss of Kidal to FLA rebels. The renewed clashes on July 4 and 5 demonstrate a relentless, simultaneous pressure on the state across multiple fronts, stretching from the northern desert strongholds down to the southern outskirts of the capital. While armed groups continue to maintain intense military and informational pressure, the Malian army insists it is pressing forward with its security operations to stabilize the nation.
