Seychelles’s President Wavel Ramkalawan has been leading tributes to national music icon Katty Melanie who passed away over the weekend.
Seychelles’ most beloved female singer, songwriter and director has been battling stage 4 cervical cancer and was interviewed last January saying although the disease was taking a heavy toll on her physically and emotionally, she was facing each day with resilience.
“It is with profound sadness that I have learned of the passing of Katty Melanie, one of Seychelles’ most beloved and talented female singers” President Ramkalawan said.
He said Katty’s voice, music and artistry after touching the hearts of generations of Seychellois became part of the soundtrack of Seychelles’ cultural identity. President Ramkalawan said through her music, Melanie carried the spirit of Seychelles to every home and celebration, leaving behind a legacy that will live on in the soul of its people.
‘On behalf of the Government and people of Seychelles, and on my own personal behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences to her children, family, loved ones, and all who mourn her loss. May you find comfort in the knowledge that her memory will continue to inspire and unite us through the power of her music” his statement concluded.
