Cement manufacturer LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire is prioritizing environmental preservation and the construction of a sustainable future, embedding these principles within its development strategies as it aims to solidify its position as the leading cement provider in the Ivorian market.
Recognizing its responsibility to local communities and its role in supporting initiatives by local authorities and partners, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire is implementing a significant investment strategy focused on minimizing its ecological footprint.
These ongoing efforts are geared towards transforming its plant into a model of green industry within Côte d’Ivoire, seamlessly integrating industrial efficiency with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The company’s flagship projects exemplify this forward-thinking vision.
This proactive and responsible approach to production builds upon major initiatives undertaken in recent years. Notably, in 2018, the cement manufacturer invested over 3.5 billion CFA francs (€5.3 million) to install a cement bag palletizer. This equipment has significantly reduced manual handling, a primary source of dust emissions during loading operations. Currently, over 30 percent of the company’s bagged cement volumes are palletized, contributing to improved working conditions and a reduction in handling-related dust emissions.
In 2021, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire achieved another significant milestone with the commissioning of a new clinker silo, representing an investment of 18 billion CFA francs (€28 million). This strategic infrastructure has led to a 90 percent reduction in truck unloading operations, resulting in a substantial decrease in dust emissions associated with raw material transportation. It has also alleviated congestion in the port area by eliminating the equivalent of 18,000 truck journeys annually.
Targeting dust reduction
In July 2024, the company further advanced its environmental initiatives by investing 360 million CFA francs (€550,000) in an innovative cover for its plant’s shipping area. This pioneering project underscores the company’s strong commitment to ensuring a healthier and more welcoming working environment for its employees and the surrounding communities. This infrastructure has significantly reduced dust generation during loading operations, leading to a noticeable improvement in the quality of life around the industrial site. It also provides optimal protection for raw materials and finished products from adverse weather, enhancing operational cleanliness and safety. As part of its continuous improvement efforts, the cement company launched a program in 2023 to renovate its internal roads through 2025, with an investment of 290 million CFA francs (€440,000). This project aims to improve traffic flow within the site while mitigating the environmental impact of mud. By 2026, an additional budget of 72.2 million CFA francs (approximately €110,000) is planned to further these efforts and complete the road rehabilitation.
Embracing recycling and circular economy principles
In 2024, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire reinforced its commitment to the circular economy with the installation of a cement recycling plant, an investment of 19.7 million CFA francs (€30,000). This infrastructure allows for the reintegration of accidentally spilled materials back into the production cycle, thereby reducing waste and demonstrating an innovative approach to resource management. In line with this principle, the company plans to soon acquire a dedicated suction machine to further increase recycling capacity and significantly reduce industrial waste generation.
The company’s dedication to combining performance with sustainability is central to its overall strategy. These investments extend beyond technological or financial advancements, reflecting a more ambitious vision of an industry that can successfully reconcile efficiency with environmental responsibility. By actively supporting initiatives from public partners, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire contributes to achieving shared goals in sustainable industrial practices and the broader Sustainable Development Goals.
From minimizing dust emissions to optimizing resource utilization, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire is establishing itself as a leader in sustainability, both within Côte d’Ivoire and beyond. Through targeted investments and a long-term strategic vision, the company demonstrates that it is indeed possible to combine industrial efficiency with a profound respect for the environment.
