Lesotho has begun extending electricity connections to households in three villages as government deepens rural electrification to improve living conditions in underserved communities.
The Department of Energy, through its Rural Electrification Unit, said the initiative is expected to connect households in Moreneng, Khohlong and Sekhutlong, with at least 100 families expected to benefit.
Officials said the contractor has been given 10 weeks to complete the works, after which the targeted households will gain access to electricity.
The project is part of government’s broader programme to expand rural electrification and ensure that more Basotho households, particularly in underserved areas, enjoy reliable power supply.
Lesotho’s rural electrification programme has been rolled out gradually over the past two decades, aiming to close the gap between urban centres and remote communities.
While electrification rates have improved, many villages remain off‑grid, limiting opportunities for economic activity, education and access to essential services.
For residents of Moreneng, Khohlong and Sekhutlong, the new connections promise improved household livelihoods, greater economic opportunities and better access to services powered by electricity.
