The severe weather has directly affected 2,790 people across 355 households while causing 153 structural collapses nationwide. National emergency records indicate that the casualties and damage stem from six major flooding incidents, ten lightning strikes, and four severe windstorms, though authorities have not yet released a regional breakdown of the victims.
The humanitarian situation has deteriorated rapidly over the past three weeks, with the death toll more than doubling and the number of affected individuals nearly tripling since the government’s previous update on August 13. While the current casualties remain below the catastrophic impacts of recent years—which saw 76 fatalities and 260,000 displaced people prompt a national state of disaster—meteorological agencies warn that the country remains highly vulnerable as river levels continue to rise heading into September. Forecasts predict ongoing thunderstorm activity, high winds, and localized heavy downpours that pose an immediate risk to urban centers, particularly the capital district of Bamako, where overflowing drainage channels frequently trigger sudden flash floods.
In response to the compounding weather hazards, the Civil Protection Agency has deployed rapid-response units and mobilized community volunteer brigades to clear stormwater collectors, unblock natural waterways, and maintain municipal drainage infrastructure. Disaster management officials have instructed residents to limit non-essential travel during severe storms, steer clear of flooded roadways, and seek refuge in structurally sound buildings away from trees and power lines. Government emergency agencies confirmed that targeted relief operations and immediate aid distributions are underway to assist displaced and affected families across the hardest-hit zones.
