Malian authorities officially launched the “Rethinking the National Museum of Mali” project in Bamako on April 21, 2026, marking a significant step toward modernizing the country’s premier cultural institution.
Developed in partnership with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, the initiative is designed to upgrade the museum’s conservation standards, enhance security systems for its vast collections, and strengthen the professional capacity of its staff. Minister of Handicrafts, Culture, Industry and Tourism Mamou Daffé inaugurated the project alongside Spanish delegates, emphasizing a shared goal of bringing Mali’s rich heritage closer to the public, with a specific focus on engaging younger audiences through new cultural outreach programs.
As a cornerstone of national heritage preservation, the museum has maintained a vital educational role despite ongoing challenges in collection management and security. Recent data underscores this impact, as the institution recorded nearly 11,000 visitors in 2025, the majority of whom were pupils and students. This modernization effort is particularly timely as Mali engages in international discussions regarding the restitution of cultural property held abroad. By improving internal infrastructure and management, the museum aims to demonstrate its ability to provide world-class conservation conditions for returned artifacts while continuing to serve as a hub for cultural dialogue and exhibitions.
This collaboration is part of a wider strategic partnership between Mali and Spain aimed at the professionalization of the cultural sector. Beyond technical upgrades, the project addresses the urgent need to combat the illicit trafficking of artworks by fortifying the institution’s tracking and security protocols. While the total funding for the initiative remains undisclosed, the project represents a clear commitment to transforming the National Museum of Mali into a modern, resilient institution capable of protecting the country’s history for future generations.
