Morocco’s plywood market has jumped to the second-largest in Africa, with a value of $109 million in 2024. According to a new report from the IndexBox institute, Morocco is now only behind Egypt in the sector.
The report highlights that Egypt remains the dominant player with a market value of $437 million, followed by Morocco and Tanzania. Morocco’s market has seen steady growth over the past decade, with an average annual increase of 3.4% between 2013 and 2024, reflecting a consistent rise in domestic consumption.
At a continental level, the African plywood market has faced challenges, with consumption dropping for a second consecutive year to two million cubic meters in 2024. The total market value is estimated at $1.4 billion, still below its 2019 peak. The largest consumers by volume are Egypt, Tanzania, and Algeria, which together account for 26% of the total demand.
In terms of production, Africa saw a 2.1% increase in 2024, reaching 1.5 million cubic meters. The top producers were Tanzania, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire.
While African plywood imports dropped by 9.3%, Morocco saw its export value skyrocket. With a 4.8% share of the total export volume, Morocco recorded the highest average annual growth in value at 148% between 2013 and 2024.
The average export price for African plywood was $429 per cubic meter, but Morocco’s price was significantly higher, reaching $1,100 per cubic meter. This contrasts sharply with Uganda, one of the most competitive exporters, which had a price of $201 per cubic meter.
