Morocco and Mauritania are set to open a second land corridor in October, the Amgala border crossing, which will create a new strategic trade route between the two countries. The new post, located east of the Sahara, will directly connect the Moroccan city of Smara to Bir Moghrein in northern Mauritania.
This new crossing will complement the existing Guerguerate border post and is expected to provide a major boost to regional trade. It is a key part of Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, a project aimed at connecting landlocked Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean’s maritime corridors.
The opening of this border post is particularly significant for regional integration. It will improve logistical access for Mauritania and, more broadly, for Mali, reinforcing Morocco’s role as a vital trade hub with the Sahel.
The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) have been working closely with their Mauritanian counterparts to secure the new passage and ensure the smooth flow of goods. This collaboration highlights a shared commitment to building new, secure transit routes and exploring the possibility of opening more border crossings in the future.
This development strengthens Morocco’s geopolitical and economic influence in the region while solidifying its ties with Mauritania and advancing the shared goal of boosting trade routes to the Sahel.
