Uganda is set to host a four-day International Apiculture Apimondia Symposium and Exhibition under the theme “Beekeeping for business and livelihoods” starting from August 25, 2026, APA can report on Thursday.
The symposium is expected to provide a major platform for knowledge exchange, innovation, investment and collaboration while showcasing Uganda’s growing apiculture industry and its potential to contribute to sustainable livelihoods, food security, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
Organised by the Uganda National Apiculture Development Organization (UNADO) in partnership with MAAIF, the event comes at a time when beekeeping is increasingly being recognised not simply as a traditional agricultural activity, but as an important component of green economic development.
Beekeeping has long been part of Uganda’s rural economy, particularly among smallholder farmers. For many households, beekeeping provides an additional source of income without requiring large amounts of land. It can also be integrated with crop production, agroforestry and conservation initiatives.
Through pollination, bees support the productivity and quality of numerous crops. At the same time, beekeeping can encourage farmers to maintain vegetation and flowering plants that provide forage for bees, creating a natural link between agricultural production and environmental conservation.
UNADO said this makes apiculture particularly relevant to Uganda’s efforts to promote climate-smart and nature-based agricultural systems.
During the event, researchers are expected to have an opportunity to share new findings and technologies while beekeepers will bring practical experiences from the field and policymakers will discuss the enabling environment required for sector growth and investors and private-sector actors will explore emerging commercial opportunities.
The event is expected to bring together beekeepers, researchers, policymakers, investors, development partners and private-sector actors from Uganda, Africa and beyond.
