Tesla, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has formalised the establishment of its first African
factory in Morocco, following several months of confidential negotiations, L’Economiste reported.
Tesla’s establishment strengthens Morocco’s position as an industrial and energy hub and confirms its strategy of integrating into high-value global value chains.
According to the daily newspaper the investment will reach $5 billion, or approximately €4.65 billion.
The future factory will be located in the Kenitra free zone, on 300 hectares, near the Tangier Med port.
Its annual production capacity is estimated at 400,000 vehicles, with the expected creation of approximately 25,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The models concerned will be the Model Y and an entry-level compact vehicle priced at $25,000, intended for emerging markets. “Morocco represents a strategic gateway to Africa and the Arab world, with a skilled workforce and a clear vision for the energy transition,” said Elon Musk.
He praised the Kingdom’s political stability and Tangier Med’s logistical strengths as key factors in the decision.
This location is part of an already structured automotive ecosystem, home to major manufacturers such as Renault and Stellantis.
“The arrival of Tesla definitively establishes Morocco as a leading industrial platform,” said Musk.
Construction of the site is expected to begin in September 2025, with production expected to begin in late 2027. The first vehicles to leave the Moroccan factory could be marketed as early as 2028.
According to Karim Tazi, President of the Federation of Mechanical and Metallurgical Industries, this facility will mark a new step in the upgrading of the national industry.
“Technology transfers will be considerable, particularly in batteries and on-board electronics,” he
stressed.
