A statement released Tuesday by the Quai d’Orsay, following the meeting between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, France has reaffirmed its
“inviolable” position on the issue of the Morocco’s Western Sahara.
The statement reiterates the position expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron to King Mohammed VI in his letter of July 30, 2024, emphasising France’s position which may not change any time soon.
Paris holds that the future of the Western Sahara is integral to Moroccan sovereignty, while reiterating “the inviolability of France’s position” and its commitment to “act consistently with this position” at national and international levels.
Furthermore, the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs reiterated its “clear and consistent support for the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty” as “the only framework within which
this issue must be resolved,” emphasising that it is “the only basis” for reaching a political solution, the statement reads.
Noting the “increasingly broad international consensus” in support of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, Mr. Jean-Noel Barrot emphasised that France intends to play its full part in it.
Furthermore, France reiterates its commitment “to supporting Morocco’s significant efforts to promote economic and social development” in the kingdom’s southern provinces, recalling the various measures taken in this regard and expressing its desire to continue this momentum, the
statement concludes.
