After securing a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Moroccan head coach Walid Regragui is shifting focus to what he describes as a “very difficult” upcoming clash against Mali.
The Atlas Lions, playing at home at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, overcame early nerves and torrential rain to earn three points in their quest for a continental title.
Despite the eventual win, Morocco faced initial struggles: Early Pressure: The team had an opportunity to lead in the 11th minute, but Soufiane Rahimi failed to convert a penalty won by Brahim Diaz. Weather and Tension: Regragui noted that both the weather conditions and the inherent pressure of being the host nation contributed to a tense first half. Breakthrough: The second half saw tactical improvements. Brahim Diaz broke the deadlock, and Ayoub El Kaabi sealed the win in the 74th minute with what Regragui termed an “extraordinary” goal.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Regragui emphasized the importance of the result for the fans and the team’s momentum. “The opening match is always difficult for the host country. There was a lot of tension… but the victory was beneficial,” he remarked. He credited the win to a persistent mindset, noting that the team correctly anticipated that Comoros would eventually “crack” under sustained pressure.
Looking ahead, the Moroccan coach was clear about the caliber of their next opponent: High-Level Talent: Regragui highlighted that Mali possesses “very high-level players,” making the match a “real test” for both sides. Brahim Diaz’s Perspective: The “Man of the Match,” Brahim Diaz, echoed this sentiment, stating that while the win over Comoros provides a boost, the team must continue to improve and refine their scoring ability.
Morocco currently sits at the top of Group A with 3 points. The group’s competitive landscape will become clearer following Monday’s match between Mali and Zambia at the Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca.
