Senegal has taken a decisive stride in revamping its national sports policy with the adoption of a new Sports Code.
The bill, approved this Wednesday during a Council of Ministers meeting chaired by President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, represents a long-awaited and pivotal overhaul of the legal and institutional framework governing Senegalese sport.
The new Sports Code is the culmination of an extensive consultation process that brought together various stakeholders, including public bodies, sports federations, professionals, civil society, and the private sector. It embodies an ambitious and inclusive vision, redefining the legal foundations of sport across all levels: amateur, professional, school, university, and elite.
This comprehensive legal framework introduces significant reforms designed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving sports sector. Key changes include: Modernization of legal status for sports associations. Creation of a favorable environment for private investment in sports infrastructure and activities. Mandatory certification of public sports facilities to enhance safety and quality standards. Establishment of mandatory accreditation for organizations operating in the public sports service. Introduction of target-based agreements between the State and federations, to foster strategic management of sports policies.
A catalyst for national development
Beyond its regulatory scope, the Sports Code is envisioned as a powerful lever for national transformation. It aims to position sport as a vital vehicle for education, professional integration, social cohesion, and international diplomatic influence. This aligns seamlessly with the broader institutional overhaul being championed by President Diomaye Faye.
The Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture, at the forefront of this reform, has called for collective mobilization to ensure the widespread understanding and effective implementation of this new strategic framework.
The adoption of the Sports Code ushers in a new era for Senegalese sports – one poised for a professionalized, inclusive, and high-performing sector fully integrated with the nation’s transformative aspirations.
