Prime Minister Ahmadou Alhaminou Lo convened an emergency cabinet session at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday morning to evaluate the severe flood damage and strengthen government response operations following heavy downpours across Senegal.
Triggered by cumulative rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters over a 48-hour period, the inundations caused widespread infrastructural destruction, major transit disruptions, and confirmed fatalities across multiple administrative regions.
The localized casualties reflect severe structural collapses in high-density areas: in Dakar’s Parcelles Assainies district, a collapsed property wall claimed the lives of a 25-year-old woman and her four-year-old child, while separate building collapses resulted in one death and two injuries in Matam’s Gourel Serigne neighborhood and one death with three injuries in Kaolack’s Tabangoye locality. Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye commended the ongoing front-line efforts of the National Fire Brigade, territorial administrators, and community volunteers. Minister of Interior and Public Security Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé reaffirmed that search-and-rescue directives, localized damage assessments, and emergency relief operations remain active under regional governors and prefects, while issuing urgent public advisories to avoid submerged roads and compromised structures as casualty figures continue to undergo provisional revision.
