The Ethiopian Federal Police Friday announced preparations to deploy sniffer dogs at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in an effort to combat drug smuggling via air transport.
The federal police in a statement quoted General Melaku Fanta, Deputy Federal Police Commissioner, as saying that K9 dogs, whose number is unspecified, will be deployed at Bole International Airport to support security operation meant to control drug trafficking from international destinations.
The federal police customs office at the airport recently seized large quantities of drugs destined for different parts of Africa through air transport in Ethiopia.
According to the statement, the K9 dogs have been trained in Tel Aviv, Israel to support drug trafficking control operations at the Bole International Airport.
Ethiopian and Israeli police hierarchies agreed to work together to control drug trafficking in Ethiopia’s airport which has been used as a transit for drug trafficking to and from Africa.
The number of sniffer dogs which will be deployed early this year has not been specified.
