Marguerite Gnakade, former Minister of the Armed Forces of Togo was arrested Wednesday morning at her home in Lomé.
This arrest comes after several months of public criticism of President Faure Gnassingbe and comes amid growing political tensions in the country.
According to witnesses, hooded and heavily armed security agents surrounded Marguerite Gnakade’s residence before arresting her.
She was then taken to an unspecified destination. Dismissed in December 2022, the former minister had publicly opposed the management of the country by Prime Minister Faure Gnassingbe and called for his resignation, notably supporting the August 30, 2025, demonstration organised by the June 6 Movement (M66) demanding the reinstatement of the 1992 constitution.
No official statement has been made regarding the specific reasons for her arrest.
Marguerite Gnakade is also the widow of the late Ernest Gnassingbe, half-brother of President Faure Gnassingbe.
