The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued an urgent call for de-escalation on Wednesday, amid reports of worrying military movements in and around the capital.
In a statement, UNSMIL denounced an intensification of armed deployments despite recent partial truces.
It urged newly positioned groups in Tripoli to withdraw immediately, reiterating that any use of
force in densely populated areas would constitute a violation of international humanitarian law.
Tripoli remains tense, torn between forces loyal to Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and autonomous militias such as Rada or the Stability Support Apparatus, the latter forcibly dismantled in May.
The lack of a unified command, local rivalries, and the stalled electoral process are fueling instability.
Faced with this impasse, UNSMIL is attempting to revive the “joint security committees,” although their impact remains marginal.
The UN is calling on Libyan actors to prioritize dialogue, as foreign powers such as Turkey and Russia quietly strengthen their influence on the ground.
