The 56th Ordinary Session of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) Inter-Parliamentary Committee is underway in Dakar, Senegal, from July 14 to 18, 2025.
This significant gathering brings together parliamentarians from the eight member states to deliberate on the proposed 2026 budget and advance regional integration efforts.
Since Monday, July 14, the Senegalese capital has been hosting forty members of parliament, who will dedicate five days to scrutinizing the 2026 budget proposal and the Inter-Parliamentary Committee’s Multi-Year Budget Programming Framework for 2026-2028.
Chaired by the Committee’s Acting President, this pivotal meeting aims to enhance inter-parliamentary cooperation and fortify the democratic oversight of Union policies. Experts from the WAEMU Commission are slated to present on the budgetary expenditure execution procedures of the Union’s various bodies. In her address, Honorable Deputy Rocky Ndiaye, representing the President of the National Assembly of Senegal, underscored the Committee’s vital role in fostering regional integration, likening it to the “legislative heart in gestation” of a future WAEMU Parliament. As Vice-President of the National Assembly, Ms. Ndiaye emphasized the critical importance of parliamentary dialogue in strengthening cooperation and solidarity among member states.
This meeting occurs amidst ongoing economic reforms and a collective ambition to deepen the Union, with the overarching goal of consolidating solidarity and promoting sustainable development across the region.
Discussions will continue until Friday, July 18, including a review of the implementation status of the 2025 budget as of July 15. The session is anticipated to conclude with key recommendations aimed at reinforcing WAEMU’s institutional framework.
