A 22‑year‑old footballer has died after collapsing following a collision during an amateur match in Lundazi district in Zambia’s Eastern Province, police confirmed on Wednesday.
Eastern Province police chief Robertson Mweemba said the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon during a match between Vundumu Football Club and Chimuzizi Football Club.
Striker Stanely Mtonga collided with goalkeeper Erick Kalowe, with both players falling to the ground.
While the goalkeeper was treated on the field, Mtonga was rushed to Kakumba health post after complaining of chest pains.
Health workers administered medication and advised that he be monitored at home, but his condition deteriorated later that night.
He died as family members were preparing to take him to Lundazi District Hospital.
