A mine tragedy in Sudan’s Red Sea State has left 11 people dead, local media reported on Monday.
The Sudan Tribune said a mine in the Kersh al-Feel site in the Houeid region of northeastern Sudan collapsed on Sunday leading to the tragedy.
In a statement state-owned Mineral Resources Company confirmed the incident and promised to investigate its cause, with a view to monitoring mining operations more closely.
The mine in question was previously closed over the violation of safety regulations.
Sudan’s informal mining sector has been dogged by lack of safety regulations for miners who usually work under risky conditions.
Sudan a country riven with internal strife since 2023, has at least more than one million artisanal miners who use inferior implements to work in precarious mines.
However, the traditional mining industry accounts for 80 percent of Sudan’s total gold output.
Last year the country cemented its place as one of Africa’s top gold producers with roughly 64 tonnes.
