A collision involving three vehicles on South Africa’s N1 highway in Western Cape province has killed 21 people, police confrmed.
Police spokesperson Christopher Spies said the crash, which occurred in the early hours of Monday between Prince Albert and Leeu‑Gamka, involved two minibus taxis and a sport utility vehicle.
Eighteen people were declared dead at the scene, while three others died after being taken to hospital. Four survivors remain in serious condition.
The tragedy was the second major crash in as many days. On Sunday, eight people were killed near Ermelo in Mpumalanga province.
Fatal traffic accidents remain a recurring problem in South Africa where minibus taxis are a dominant mode of transport and road safety enforcement is often strained.
Government statistics show thousands die annually in crashes, with human error, speeding and poor vehicle maintenance among the leading causes.
