Adverse weather conditions are slowing relief and recovery efforts as South Africa continues to battle deadly flooding that has claimed at least 38 lives in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.
Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane said on Wednesday that worsening conditions in parts of Limpopo were making it difficult for emergency teams to reach affected communities.
The province has now recorded 18 deaths, with six people still missing, while Mpumalanga’s death toll stands at 20.
Days of intense rainfall have destroyed or damaged thousands of homes, displacing hundreds of families.
According to government data, 1,942 houses have been damaged in Limpopo and 1,808 in Mpumalanga.
Simelane said the Emergency Housing Unit has been deployed to both provinces but verification of damage – essential for determining the type of assistance required – has been hampered by the weather.
“We will continue to provide interventions as and when we conclude verification processes,” she said.
Despite this, authorities have begun supporting households already verified as needing help.
