A delegation of African ambassadors accredited to Morocco recently concluded a visit to the Sahara, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Green March and the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which solidified international support for the Moroccan autonomy plan.
The ambassadors, representing Benin, Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, toured Laayoune and Dakhla to witness firsthand the extensive development projects underway in the Kingdom’s southern provinces.
The African diplomats paid a special visit to the City of Trades and Skills (CMC) in Laayoune, where they highly commended Morocco’s Royal Vision for expanding vocational training, particularly in the Sahara region. They emphasized that this vision has established Morocco as a leading country in strengthening the capacities of young African trainees across various sectors.
The visit, organized by the Diplomatic Foundation, aimed to showcase opportunities for vocational training and promote South-South cooperation.
Mohamoudou Youssoufou, the Ambassador of Cameroon and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Rabat, praised the quality of Morocco’s educational infrastructure. He noted that Cameroon currently sends approximately twenty trainees to the Kingdom annually for specialized training, highlighting the exemplary nature of this bilateral cooperation.
Abdelati Habek, president of the Diplomatic Foundation, stated that the initiative’s objective is to “highlight a development model based on education, training, and innovation as drivers of the future in the Southern Provinces.”
He stressed that the ambassadors observed concrete projects that illustrate Morocco’s commitment to active cooperation with countries of the Global South. This involves sharing expertise and creating strong linkages between universities and professional training centers.
The visiting delegation participated in meetings across the health, education, and vocational training sectors, including sessions at the Faculty of Medicine and the African Institute for Research in Sustainable Agriculture at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).
In summary, the visit provided African diplomats with a direct view of the region’s modernization, underscoring the Moroccan Sahara’s role as a platform for regional development and knowledge sharing.
