The African Union (AU) is urgently calling on all Libyan armed factions to implement a permanent ceasefire following recent deadly clashes in Tripoli.
The AU’s Peace and Security Council, in a statement sent to APA, vehemently condemned the violence and firmly rejected any foreign interference in Libya’s political process.
The AU’s appeal comes at a critical juncture, as efforts to establish lasting peace have been stalled by the absence of an inclusive national consensus among Libya’s various stakeholders.
Recent fighting in the capital, primarily between Brigade 444 and the Special Deterrence Forces (RADA), resulted in eight fatalities, according to the Libyan Ministry of Defense. Although the immediate hostilities have subsided, they have significantly escalated underlying tensions in Tripoli. The African Union reiterated its strong support for a Libyan-led political solution, emphasizing that the country’s internal affairs must remain free from external influence.
This outbreak of violence coincides with a period of heightened popular mobilization in Libya. Recent protests in Tripoli have seen calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, adding another layer of complexity to the already volatile political landscape.
