The Burkinabe government has officially finalized the transformation of Air Burkina into a state-owned company following a decree adopted by the Council of Ministers.
This move legally enshrines the state’s role as the sole shareholder and marks a definitive shift in the airline’s governance structure.
The transition follows years of significant financial and operational challenges that threatened the national carrier’s assets and service capacity. In response to this instability, transitional authorities initiated a comprehensive restructuring plan to stabilize the company. A pivotal moment in this process occurred on September 24, 2024, when the government acquired the final remaining 1% of shares from a private investor for the symbolic price of one franc.
By operating under Law No. 025/99/AN, which governs state-owned enterprises in Burkina Faso, the government aims to provide the airline with a more stable legal and financial foundation. This nationalization is framed as a sovereign commitment to ensuring long-term viability and improving air connectivity within a challenging regional environment.
