An ambush by fighters of the Rapid Support Forces has led to the death on Tuesday of a Sudanese military commander in the state of Al Jazirah, APA can report on Wednesday.
The RSF had launched an ambush outside the town of Tambul town marking an escalaiton of the conflict with the Sudanese military in recent days leading to the death of Brigadier General Ahmed Shaa Al-Din.
The defection over the weekend of RSF commander Abu Aqla Kikl to the Sudanese army, triggered retaliatory raids targeting areas where the defector may have some form of influence.
Military sources claimed that Shaa Al-Din had supervised Kikl’s surrender and was at the head of an operation near Tambul when his forces ran into an RSF ambush.
The town had been briefly occupied by Sudanese army regulars but were ousted by RSF fighters who now control it.
An RSF statement claimed that aside from the bregadier general, its operatives had killed 370 Sudanese soldiers and commandeered 60 of their combat vehicles. This could not be independently verified.
Accusations of abuse against civilians including rape have been levelled against the RSF since its recent skirmishes with the army in Al Jazirah State.
A group known as the Rufaa Resistance Committees has been documenting cases of the alleged rape of girls and the killing of residents which the RSF had denied.
The army and RSF have fought themselves to a stalemate since the conflict over control of the country began in April 2023.
Thousands have been killed and millions have been displaced both in and out of the country as several attempts t broker a truce between forces under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan who heads the military junta and Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo who leads the RSF.
