The African Union (AU) has voiced deep concern over the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Saturday’s US military attacks on governmental institutions in Venezuela, warning that the developments pose a grave threat to international law and regional stability.
In a communiqué issued by the AU Commission, the continental body reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and self‑determination enshrined in the UN Charter.
It stressed that Venezuela’s internal challenges must be resolved through inclusive political dialogue rather than external intervention.
“The African Union underscores the importance of dialogue, peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks, in a spirit of good neighbourliness, cooperation and peaceful coexistence among nations,” the communiqué read
“The African Union emphasises that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.”
The AU’s statement comes after reports that US forces abducted Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during coordinated operations in Caracas.
The raids also targeted key government facilities, escalating tensions in the already polarised South American nation.
Washington has justified its actions as part of efforts to dismantle what it calls an authoritarian and criminal regime but critics argue the intervention undermines Venezuela’s sovereignty and risks destabilising the wider region.
Maduro is facing trial in a US court to face drug peddling and arms charges.
The Venezuelan leader’s disappearance has sparked international condemnation, with allies demanding his immediate release and warning of the precedent set by unilateral military action.
The AU expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people, calling for respect of constitutional frameworks and urging dialogue as the only sustainable path forward.
“The African Union calls upon all parties concerned to exercise restraint, responsibility, and respect for international law to prevent any escalation and to preserve regional peace and stability.”
