African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf met on Friday in Addis Ababa with members of the International Contact Group for the Great Lakes to discuss the evolving security situation in the region, particularly in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The talks focused on how the crisis is affecting peace, security and development in the wider Great Lakes region, the AU said in a statement to APA.
The two parties underscored the importance of backing initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue, reducing tensions and strengthening trust among actors in the region.
They welcomed progress under the Washington Agreement and the Doha Process while stressing the need to consolidate these gains through full implementation of the commitments made.
Key priorities are establishing a durable ceasefire, expanding humanitarian access, reinforcing confidence‑building steps and sustaining dialogue among the parties.
Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s central role in supporting regional and international initiatives aimed at securing a peaceful and lasting resolution to the crisis.
He urged better alignment between the AU‑led mediation mechanisms and related initiatives to improve their effectiveness.
ICG members reaffirmed their backing for the AU’s leadership in advancing peace, security and stability across the Great Lakes region.
The meeting reaffirmed that a lasting solution to the crisis can only be achieved through dialogue and peaceful means.
They urged all stakeholders to meet their obligations, safeguard civilians, allow unimpeded humanitarian operations and adhere to international humanitarian law.
The AU Commission chief warned that the Ebola epidemic is placing additional pressure on an already fragile humanitarian situation in the region.
He called for stronger regional cooperation, improved cross‑border coordination and enhanced health‑preparedness capacities, in line with conclusions from the recent AU High‑Level Meeting on Ebola in Bujumbura.
At the close of the consultations, participants reaffirmed their view that inclusive dialogue, good governance and regional cooperation are essential to securing lasting peace, strengthening stability and advancing development in the Great Lakes region.
