The Beninese government has called for restraint and a sense of fraternity among internet users from both Benin and Gabon, following a recent online controversy.
The dispute originated on social media and concerned Beninese traders living in Gabon.
In an official statement released on Monday, Beninese authorities underscored their “excellent cooperation” with Gabon and asserted that Beninese citizens living there are benefiting from the goodwill of local Gabonese authorities. Cotonou expressed its strong determination to continue working with its Gabonese counterparts to strengthen bilateral relations “in a healthy and mutually beneficial climate.”
This statement follows an initial one issued on August 14 by the Beninese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which had expressed concern over threats and acts of intimidation targeting Beninese citizens in the Lambaréné province of Gabon. These threats came after market places were allocated, and Benin had announced it was preparing a census mission for the possible voluntary return of some of its nationals.
By reaffirming its commitment to state sovereignty and the pan-Africanist ideal, Benin is advocating for peace and solidarity among all African peoples.
