Beninese football legend Razak Omotoyossi has passed away in Lagos, Nigeria, at the age of 39.
The prolific striker, known as “Omogoal” for his efficiency in front of the net, was the second-highest scorer in the history of the Benin national team, the Squirrels (now the Cheetahs), with 21 goals in 47 appearances between 2004 and 2016.
Omotoyossi left a lasting mark on Beninese football, notably participating in the 2008 and 2010 African Cup of Nations. His professional career took him to clubs in numerous countries, including Moldova, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, and France, where he played for the iconic French club FC Metz.
FC Metz, where Omotoyossi played 28 matches and scored two goals during the 2009-2010 season, expressed its deep sorrow in an official statement. “FC Metz learned with deep sorrow of the sudden passing of Razak Omotoyossi, a former player of the club, at the age of 39. The club wishes to express its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Known as “Pobe’s Bull” for his physical strength, Omotoyossi was celebrated for his speed and goal-scoring talent. His death comes after a period of personal hardship, including a house fire and the loss of his sister, which reportedly affected his mental health. In early July, he had issued a public plea for help on social media.
Beyond his on-field performance, Omotoyossi is remembered as an emblematic figure and a devoted servant of Beninese football. He is being praised by former teammates and fans for his commitment, passion, and friendship.
