Botswana’s President Duma Boko has been recognized as one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People for 2025, a prestigious honour that highlights his visionary leadership and impact on the global stage.
The announcement was made on Thursday as TIME unveiled its annual list celebrating individuals shaping the world’s future.
“President Boko’s inclusion in this global list is a testament to his visionary leadership and continued efforts to elevate Botswana’s position on the international stage,” the Botswana government said in a statement.
Boko rose to power following his landslide victory in elections held in October 2024 in which his party dislodged the Botswana Democratic Party which had ruled the country for nearly six decades.
Boko has championed progressive policies aimed at fostering sustainable development, enhancing governance and elevating Botswana’s profile in international diplomacy.
The TIME 100 list also features other prominent Africans, including Zimbabwean educationist Angeline Murimirwa, Gambian women’s rights activist Fatou Baldeh, Cameroonian public health expert Christian Happi and Moroccan-born agricultural scientist Ismahane Elouafi.
Global figures such as US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, billionaire Elon Musk, technology entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg and sports icon Serena Williams also made the list.
