Global energy major bp has embarked on a modernisation drive aimed at transforming its retail network in South Africa and accelerating the country’s transition to cleaner energy.
The initiative by bp South Africa, launched in May 2025, includes a nationwide upgrade of existing service stations and the construction of 40 new retail sites featuring electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and low-carbon battery rental services.
The overhaul marks a strategic transformation for the energy major’s South African subsidiary, aligning with broader goals to tackle energy poverty and support decarbonisation.
The new sites will be positioned along major highways and urban growth nodes, enhancing accessibility for both conventional and electric vehicle users.
To bolster fuel logistics, bp South Africa has partnered with DP World and Makwande Supply & Distribution, outsourcing specialised functions to improve delivery efficiency across urban and rural markets.
Beyond infrastructure, the company is investing in inclusive growth and local empowerment.
A R58 million ($3.3 million) partnership with the Small Enterprise Finance Agency is supporting black-owned SMEs with funding and technical training to operate service stations.
The agreement, signed in 2023, is part of bp’s broader commitment to diversity and economic transformation.
bp South Africa’s transformation aligns with the parent company’s expanding footprint across Africa.
Recent milestones include the launch of Azule Energy in Angola, the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project in Senegal and Mauritania and new gas developments in Egypt and Libya.
