The Burkinabe government has undertaken several initiatives in honour of the memory of Thomas Sankara, whose mausoleum will be inaugurated next month.
The Burkinabe authorities decided Thursday at the Council of Ministers to inaugurate the “Thomas Sankara Mausoleum and his 12 Companions” on May 17, 2025.
The announcement was made by Gilbert Ouedraogo, Minister of Communication and Culture and spokesperson for the Burkinabe government.
He indicated that the ceremony is under the high patronage of Burkina Faso junta head Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
According to Minister Ouedraogo, the choice of date refers to a historic day, May
17, 1983, when the People’s Democratic Revolution (PDR) took place following the arrest of Thomas Sankara, then Prime Minister of the People’s Salvation Council (CSP).
“The erection of the mausoleum aims, on the one hand, to celebrate the memory of Captain Thomas Sankara and his 12 companions, and on the other hand, to contribute to the safeguarding, preservation, and the promotion of the political legacy of the Father of the August 1983 Revolution,” the government spokesperson recalled.
