A team of Burkinabe medical professionals successfully performed a complex surgical procedure on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Fada Regional Hospital Center (CHR), involving the removal of a significant tumor and reconstruction of the mandible (lower jaw) using a metal splint on a 25-year-old patient.
The young woman had been suffering for seven years from a debilitating and progressively growing mandibular tumor that severely impacted her ability to eat and significantly affected her physical appearance.
This intricate operation has not only restored essential jaw function for the patient but has also provided her with a renewed sense of self-confidence and well-being.
According to Dr. Boa Jacques, a significant gap remains in addressing disfiguring pathologies, which are often overlooked by traditional humanitarian aid efforts. He emphasized, “These conditions seriously compromise the social reintegration and psychological well-being of patients.” Dr. Boa Jacques further stated, “It is therefore essential to mobilize more resources and raise awareness among NGOs about this issue. The current security situation poses a major obstacle to accessing care. However, with appropriate support, significant untapped potential remains to help a greater number of people.”
Considered a “major breakthrough” within the local medical community, this successful surgery was a collaborative effort by the Odontostomatology/Maxillofacial Surgery and Surgery Departments at the Fada Regional Hospital Center.
