The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a transformative restructuring of continental football, highlighted by the creation of the African Nations League and a substantial increase in funding for its 54 member associations.
In a press release published on its website, CAF confirmed it is partnering with FIFA to implement these reforms, ensuring that world-class senior national team competitions take place in Africa every year.
The new structure aims to elevate African football to a global standard while solving long-standing scheduling conflicts. Annual Elite Competition: The reforms guarantee a yearly tournament featuring Africa’s top players from the world’s most prestigious leagues.
World Cup Synchronization: In FIFA World Cup years, the 9 or 10 qualifying African teams will focus solely on World Cup preparation; no other senior continental competitions will be held during those years. Club-Country Balance: By aligning with the international football calendar, CAF aims to eliminate the frequent “club vs. country” disputes that African players often face.
“These reforms will allow African senior national team competitions to rank among the best in the world,” stated CAF President Patrice Motsepe, noting that the changes ensure the consistent participation of elite talent.
One of the most significant aspects of the reform is the dramatic increase in direct financial support to national federations: $1 Million Annual Grant: Leveraging a new $1 billion tender, CAF will now pay $1 million annually to each of its 54 member associations. 500% Increase: This is a fivefold jump from the $200,000 previously distributed before the current leadership took office. Investment in Youth: Substantial resources are earmarked for the development of both men’s and women’s youth football, which CAF identifies as its most vital long-term investment.
The reforms extend beyond the national teams to touch every level of the sport: Club Football: Prize money for the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup is set to increase. Specific figures will be announced following the AFCON 2025 in Morocco. Regional Growth: Zonal and regional competitions will receive enhanced financial and structural backing. Internal Stability: Funding will also be allocated to ensure competitive salaries for CAF employees to maintain a high professional standard within the organization.
