As part of the National Anti-Corruption Week, launched on December 9, the Prosecutor General of the Supreme Court, Mamoudou Timbo, gave an interview to Malian television in which he revealed important information about the judicial actions carried out in recent years.
He revealed that between 2021 and today, a dozen cases have been dealt with, involving some forty people, including eleven former ministers. These proceedings have uncovered embezzlement estimated at around 80 billion CFA francs, the Malian prosecutor added.
The offenses mainly concern economic and financial crimes, including the use of forgery, damage to public property, corruption, money laundering, nepotism and illegal interest.
“There are at least 80 billion in damages to the state, but we won’t know for sure until the trial is over,” said the prosecutor.
On the prosecution side, 40 people have been indicted, including 11 former ministers and their accomplices. Prosecutor Timbo acknowledged that Mali has experienced periods of inertia and hesitation in the fight against corruption.
“Today, this is no longer the case. There are no untouchables in Mali today,” he affirmed, stressing his commitment to transparency and firmness in dealing with corruption cases.
