A Chadian court has sentenced eight former leaders of the recently dissolved Political Actors Consultation Group (GCAP) to eight years in prison following a high-profile trial held at the Klessoum detention facility.
The Special Correctional Chamber of the N’Djamena Court of First Instance delivered the verdict on Friday, May 8, 2026, finding the defendants guilty of rebellion, insurrectional activity, illegal possession of weapons of war, and unlawful assembly. The group had been held at the facility since their arrest on April 25, which occurred shortly after the Supreme Court officially dissolved their organization.
The prosecution, led by Public Prosecutor Moussa Abdelkerim Saleh, linked the charges to the group’s plans to organize a mass protest titled the march of “indignation and dignity,” originally scheduled for early May. Although the accused issued a statement from prison acknowledging the dissolution of the GCAP and canceling the planned mobilization, the court proceeded with the heavy sentencing. This judicial outcome is viewed as a significant move by Chadian authorities to stabilize national institutions following a volatile political transition, though the case remains a flashpoint for international human rights observers and domestic opposition parties.
