The Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno launched the National Tree Week by planting an orange tree at the Toumai Palace.
Through this symbolic act, the Head of State called on citizens to make planting and protecting trees a collective duty, as part of his commitment to planting 10 million trees in five years.
Launching the National Tree Week, the President called on the population to strengthen their commitment to environmental protection.
The ceremony took place in the courtyard of the Toumai Palace, where the Head of State planted an orange tree, a gesture presented as a symbol of ecological renewal and civic responsibility.
“Planting is a duty, maintaining is a responsibility, destroying is a crime,” declared the Chadian President, while addressing the message of mobilization to citizens for better preservation of the nation’s tree cover.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno recalled that National Tree Week was established in 1972 by decree, stating that tree planting should become a daily habit and a lasting commitment throughout the country.
This initiative is part of one of the major commitments of his presidential programme, which aims to plant 10 million trees over a five-year period.
The Head of State affirmed that this ambition is already supported by several concrete actions undertaken across the country.
After the symbolic planting, the Chadian President presented to the media a section of the Toumai Palace transformed into a verdant garden, complete with trees, flowers and landscaping.
According to him, this site exemplifies the environmental transformation desired for Chad.
Marshal Deby Itno also emphasized the historical significance of this space, noting that it previously housed a camp of the Republican Guard, marked by painful events.
Its conversion into a green zone, he believes, illustrates the commitment to prioritizing environmental protection.
For the Chadian authorities, environmental issues are a cross-cutting challenge linked to economic and social development, as well as infrastructure.
Ecosystem restoration is thus presented as essential
for improving living conditions and strengthening the country’s resilience to climate challenges.
