The second phase of Egypt’s parliamentary elections is set to open on Tuesday, calling upon 34 million voters to cast their ballots.
The elections will determine the winners across a range of constituencies, according to the schedule released by the National Elections Authority (NEA).
This second phase resumes the electoral process following the annulment of results in 19 constituencies during the first phase. This annulment was ordered by the NEA after President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi called for “taking the necessary measures to guarantee the integrity of the process,” responding to several reports of incidents at some polling stations.
At a press conference, Ahmed Bendary, Executive Director of the NEA, assured voters that any observed violations will “immediately lead to legal action.” He strongly urged citizens to participate in large numbers, emphasizing the scope of the current round.
“34,611,991 voters are called upon to choose between 316 candidates for 141 seats” in this second round of voting, Bendary stated.
The vote will cover 13 governorates, including major population centers such as Cairo, Qalyoubiya, Menoufia, Gharbiya, Daqahliya, Sharqia, Damietta, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, and North and South Sinai. A total of 73 constituencies are involved, with 5,587 sub-polling stations established to accommodate voters.
The results of this phase are scheduled to be announced on December 2, with decisions regarding appeals published on December 14.
Voting by Egyptians residing abroad already took place on November 21 and 22. The second and final runoff round will be held on December 15 and 16 for the diaspora, and then on December 17 and 18 for domestic voters. The official and final proclamation of the results is expected on December 25, concluding the entire legislative election cycle.
