Egypt is currently gripped by a significant heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 40°C in its southern regions.
Little relief is anticipated until Sunday, according to the latest forecasts from the Meteorological Authority.
As summer officially sets in, the country is experiencing a notable escalation in temperatures. Cairo is expected to reach peaks nearing 39°C, while South Sinai, specifically the popular tourist destination of Sharm El-Sheikh, will see temperatures climb above 40°C. This unseasonal heatwave highlights the increasing vulnerability of the region to extreme weather phenomena.
The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) predicts that these high temperatures will persist until Sunday across most areas. The only exception is the northern coast, including cities like Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh, where temperatures are expected to remain below 35°C, with a further drop to 31°C anticipated on Monday. This coastal strip is projected to offer some respite with a more moderate climate and manageable humidity levels. The EMA also noted that “felt” temperatures, influenced by ambient humidity, are typically 2 to 3 degrees higher than recorded shaded temperatures.
Despite the intense daytime heat, nights and early mornings are forecasted to remain moderate nationwide. Travelers heading to Upper Egypt, particularly the historic cities of Aswan and Luxor, are advised to exercise caution as temperatures there could reach as high as 43°C.
