Osama Hammad, the head of the parallel government based in eastern Libya, has called for the immediate departure of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Hammad accuses the UN mission of bias, interference, and undermining the country’s sovereignty.
This demand marks a fresh escalation in tensions between Libya’s rival authorities and the international community. In an official statement, Hammad criticized UNSMIL for allegedly “ignoring the violence against civilians in Tripoli” and for “supporting irresponsible policies.”
He specifically denounced the UN Security Council’s review of the budget for the Reconstruction Fund, which is headed by a son of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Hammad asserts that this review constitutes unacceptable interference in Libya’s internal affairs. He further accused UNSMIL of “aligning itself with illegitimate authorities” and “trampling on the will of the people,” emphasizing that only the elected Parliament, the House of Representatives, which sits in the East, has the authority to validate the national budget.
