Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, announced the release and repatriation of Egyptian engineer Mohamed Hassanein Morsi, who had been detained since February in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, according to an official statement issued in Cairo.
“Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty contacted senior Congolese officials to secure the swift release of the Egyptian national,” Mohamed Hassanein Morsi, the Cairo statement said.
He also instructed the Egyptian embassy in Brazzaville to closely monitor Morsi’s situation, provide him with full consular assistance and ensure that his medical and material needs were met throughout his detention.
Abdelatty personally ensured that the consular department maintained a permanent line of communication with the engineer’s family, regularly updating them on the steps being taken and on his health, according to the statement.
“Thanks to the strength of bilateral relations between Cairo and Brazzaville, these intensive diplomatic efforts led to the release of the Egyptian engineer without him being brought before a court,” the statement said.
Upon returning to Egypt, Morsi and his family were officially received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Ambassador Haddad El Gohary, Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians Abroad.
On the occasion, Morsi expressed “his deep gratitude for the tireless efforts made by the Egyptian authorities over the past several months,” as well as for the unwavering support of the diplomatic mission in Brazzaville, which helped bring his detention to an end, the statement added.
