The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has suspended all political campaign activities in Mazabuka Central Constituency until further notice, citing an unstable security situation and the need to restore order ahead of the August polls.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission fully supports police directives halting public gatherings in the constituency and will only lift the suspension once security agencies confirm that conditions have improved.
The decision comes amid heightened political tensions in parts of the country.
Mazabuka has recently recorded incidents of intimidation and clashes between rival supporters, prompting concerns about escalating violence if campaigns continue unchecked.
The ECZ’s move follows separate outbreaks of political violence in Kabwe Central and Chawama where confrontations between party cadres resulted in injuries and property damage.
Kasaro said the commission is reviewing these incidents with law‑enforcement authorities to determine appropriate action under electoral laws.
He urged political parties, candidates and supporters to remain calm, exercise restraint and comply with directives issued by the Commission and the police.
The suspension underscores growing concerns about political violence ahead of the elections, with the ECZ reiterating that peaceful campaigns are essential to safeguarding the credibility of the electoral process.
Parties have been reminded of their responsibility to promote non‑violence and ensure that supporters adhere to the law.
