Coffee exports brought Ethiopia a record $2.653 billion in revenue during the just-concluded Ethiopian fiscal year, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) has announced.
Ethiopia supplied 468,967 metric tons of coffee to the international market to generate the revenue during the Ethiopian 2024/2025 fiscal year that ended on July 7, ECTA said in a statement on Wednesday.
“While this is a remarkable achievement, there remains significant untapped potential ahead,” Adugna Debela, ECTA’s Director General, was quoted as saying.
He said the increase is attributed to ongoing economic reforms undertaken by the government, involving the production of high-quality coffee and boosting productivity.
ECTA said the volume of coffee exported in the 2024/2025 fiscal year rose by 170, 478.2 metric tons while the revenue grew by 1.226 billion U.S. dollars when compared to the previous fiscal year.
Meanwhile, the east African nation recently launched a national coffee platform to deal with climate change, market vulnerability, and regulatory hurdles the sector has faced over the years.
Ethiopia, regarded as the origin of Arabica coffee, is one of Africa’s largest producers and exporters of the commodity.
Coffee production is seen as the backbone of the country’s agriculture-led economy.
